Title: Developing within Domino: Examples from Domino-E Speakers: Philippe Pavero (ADS), Jakub Rezler (ITTI), Marie Devant (Capgemini), Cédric Pralet (ONERA), Cyrille de Lussy (ADS), and Raivis Skadins (Tilde) Host(s): Thomas Stollenwerk (Oikoplus), Michael Anranter (Oikoplus)
In the second session of the Domino-E webinar series, we moved from theory to practice: three real Domino modules, developed within the project, were presented in detail — offering a concrete look into the future of modular satellite ground segments.
The Domino Architecture, or: What Makes a Domino?
The session opened with a quick recap of the Domino Architecture: modular, interoperable, and cloud-native building blocks — “Dominoes” — that can be plugged in or out of a ground segment system with minimal coupling. Find a brief overview here:
This was followed by a presentation of the three Dominoes developed in Domino-E, including the Satellite Communication & Resource Management Service (SCRMS), the Coverage Service (CS), and the Virtual Assistant Service (VAS).
📡 Domino #1: Satellite Communication & Resource Management Service (SCRMS)
Presented by: Airbus & ITTI
The SCRMS is a multi-mission Domino that coordinates communication between satellites and ground stations, optimising contact planning across constellations. It increases reactivity by integrating commercial ground stations worldwide, reducing the time between image requests and delivery.
🗺️ Domino #2: Coverage Service (CS)
Presented by: Capgemini, ONERA & ADS
This Domino optimises image acquisition over large areas by smartly distributing tasks between satellite systems. Two algorithmic approaches (one coarse-grained, one fine-tuned) allow operators to minimise coverage time, reduce overlaps, and respond to dynamic events like wildfires in real time.
💬Domino #3: Virtual Assistant Service (VAS)
Presented by: Tilde
Bringing AI into the ground segment, the VAS provides an intuitive, natural-language interface between users and EO systems — lowering entry barriers and enabling non-experts to request satellite imagery through simple conversation.
Key Takeaways and Sneak Peek into Session 3:
- Dominoes are already being implemented across Europe — proving the modular concept works in complex operational settings.
- Collaboration is essential: from high-level design to fine-tuned APIs, coordination across partners was key to success.
- AI and cloud-native systems open the door to radically more responsive, flexible, and user-friendly EO services.
In the final session of the Domino-E webinar series, we’ll explore the business opportunities and operational models enabled by the Domino architecture — from commercial service offerings to new value chains in Earth Observation.
